What’s been on repeat for you lately?

Music as an SEL Tool

I needed a connector activity for a group of department chairs, right after lunch, and I wanted one that would build SEL skills at the same time. This is the one we used.

Everyone starts with their own music: the songs on repeat lately, and the songs tied to a memory, a place, or a person. From there, the activity introduces two ways people use music to work with their emotions, mood matching and mood shifting. It closes with reflection questions that are easy to share with the people around you.

Included:

  • The Benefits of Music: a two-page overview of the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical benefits

  • Music and Mood Matching Exploration: space to list your songs, plus plain-language explanations of mood matching and mood shifting

  • Seven reflection questions, including what you listen to when you want to relax, get motivated, or focus
